Are solar panels actually worth it right now?

I keep going back and forth on solar.

On paper it makes sense long-term, but upfront cost and payback period still seem to vary a lot depending on location and setup.

For anyone who’s installed solar recently:

  • What kind of ROI are you seeing?

  • Are incentives still strong enough to make it worth it?

  • Anything you wish you knew before installing?

Also curious if battery storage is becoming more of a necessity or still optional.

Installed last year — ROI is around 8 years for me. Biggest surprise was how much roof direction and shading matter. Definitely worth getting multiple quotes.

I live in a rural community and we have occasional blackouts during or after storms. The solar power has been invaluable. I highly recommend adding a battery. It is necessary during a grid failure. The math on ROI depends on many factors, but utilities only go up, so it is more likely to be a shorter ROI than you think.
